STAHS Young Musician Winner Announced!

Date Posted: Tuesday 06 July 2021

STAHS Young Musician of the Year 2021 received 200 entries across four categories, from Reception up to Year 13.

The competition was divided into four categories by instrumental family. Twelve pupils made it through to the final, adjudicated by Ruth McCreath, Assistant Director of Music at The Perse School Cambridge.

Lucy H (Year 12) claimed the title of STAHS Young Musician of the Year and was awarded the Mary Gough Scholarship after her stunning performances of Mvt III from Rachmaninov’s Cello Sonata in G minor and Mvt I from George Crumb’s Sonata for Solo Cello.

Lucy received high praise from the adjudicator who wrote, “A highly musical performance with some very sensitive phrasing and excellent control. This performance demonstrated a very high level of musicianship and excellent attention to detail. Hugely enjoyable and memorable, very well done!”

All pupils who took part in the Young Musician of the Year Competition received a certificate and comment sheet.

Congratulations to everyone who took part!

Lucy is a Music Scholar and attends the Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama outside of school. She is hoping to go on to read Music at Cambridge and is passionate about chamber music.

The Mary Gough Scholarship equates to a year’s worth of music lessons.
