At the start of July, two intrepid groups of STAHS students from last year’s Year 11 and 12 enjoyed a fantastic three-week expedition to Costa Rica. The trip was packed full of new experiences for all involved: they camped and hiked in Rincon de la Vieja, went on a night walk in Monteverde’s cloud forest (where they spotted snakes, scorpions and a tarantula!), dug stream beds and prepared cages for injured animals at an animal sanctuary, saw turtles laying their eggs on the beach in Tortuguero and went wild water rafting, to name but a few!

The students impressed teachers with their leadership and organisational skills as they managed a tight budget throughout and were often in charge of haggling to get the best deal possible, booking accommodation, meal-planning and cooking. Students saw some astounding wildlife including a caiman sunning itself on a log, toucans flying low over their campsite, a monkey dropping into their hostel and a sloth with her baby at the animal sanctuary. An exciting start to the summer break for all involved!
