We have a two-stage process for entry at Year 7: all candidates attend our 11+ assessment day, after which a number of candidates are called back for interview.
Assessment
Our Entrance Assessment Day is designed to give candidates a real sense of school life. The day is similar in length to a normal school day, with breaks, lunch and refreshments provided.
Some candidates may complete the ISEB Common Pre-Test at their current school if it acts as an invigilation centre; in these cases, children spend around half a day at STAHS for the remaining activities.
STAHS Senior is proud to be among the leading independent schools in Hertfordshire using the ISEB Common Pre-Test to assess applicants. These online, multiple-choice tests cover Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. No special preparation is required and results are age-standardised to ensure fairness.
While practice tests are not available, candidates receive examples and practice questions during the assessment to help them feel confident. An official ISEB Walkthrough is also available to show the look and feel of the tests. To help pupils prepare, STAHS Senior offers two optional 11+ Taster Days, giving them the chance to experience lessons, take part in activities and get to know the School. Details on booking these sessions are sent once the Application Form is completed. Further information for candidates is in our STAHS Assessment Guide.
Interview
Following the Entrance Assessment Day, a number of pupils will be invited back to STAHS Senior for interview. Interviews are with senior members of staff and no preparation is required. The sessions are a relaxed and enjoyable experience, with pupils taking part in group activities whilst they are with us. At the same time, parents meet individually with our Head and Deputy Heads. The meetings are purely for parents’ benefit and form no part of the assessment process for pupils.
