Entry to Prep (age 4-11)

Prep admissions

St Albans High School for Girls Prep (STAHS Prep) is a selective independent girls’ school for ages 4-11, with age-appropriate assessment at every entry point.

Set within 18 acres of beautiful grounds in Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire, STAHS Prep offers an ideal location, with quick car journeys from nearby towns: St Albans (15 minutes), Harpenden (10 minutes), Welwyn Garden City (10 minutes) and Hatfield (11 minutes). Excellent road links make school drop‑off effortless for families across the region. We combine academic excellence with exceptional pastoral care, creating an environment where girls can thrive. Pupils move seamlessly to STAHS Senior in the heart of St Albans, without the pressure of 11+ exams, allowing us to deliver a bold and forward-thinking curriculum.

Age-appropriate Pre-Prep assessment

At STAHS, we make the admissions process as welcoming and stress-free as possible. Your child will enjoy a relaxed, one-hour session with our experienced Pre-Prep team in a calm, play-based environment – much like a pre-school setting. With engaging activities and toys, the focus is on helping your child feel comfortable and happy.

To ensure individual attention, we keep groups very small – just a few girls at a time. Before the assessment, you and your child will be invited to a familiarisation playdate, giving you both the chance to feel at ease and excited about the return visit.

Our approach reflects the ethos of STAHS: exceptional pastoral care, academic excellence and a nurturing start to your child’s educational journey.

Age-appropriate Prep assessment

We create a warm, welcoming atmosphere on our assessment day, helping girls feel at ease while experiencing the true spirit of STAHS. The day blends fun, interactive activities with formal assessments, giving a genuine taste of school life. Girls take part in online assessments in Maths, English and Reasoning, complete a writing task, enjoy a lesson and outdoor team activity, and attend an interview.

Entry to other Year groups

While availability varies, we welcome applications for different year groups throughout the year. Our Admissions Team is always happy to discuss your individual circumstances.
