The Chemistry department aims to enable students to experience the wonder of discovery through their depth of understanding of the subject. Our highly experienced, committed and motivated teaching staff inspire confidence, allowing girls to hypothesise and explore new concepts independently. Excellent working relationships between staff and pupils develop through an atmosphere of mutual respect and enjoyment of learning to ensure that students are able to appreciate the applications of Chemistry in our evolving world.
We actively encourage and support further interest and opportunities outside the classroom and many students achieve success in these competitive ventures. Each year, a high proportion of students are selected for Oxbridge masterclass events and work experience weeks. A Level Chemistry has an extremely high uptake with over a third of all Sixth Form students choosing to study it. Many of these students progress onto scientific degree courses, with an outstanding success rate in the Medical and Veterinary sciences. The department’s experienced and dedicated staff encourage and support students through individualised university preparation sessions.
The short film below was created for the University of Sheffield Harry and Margaret KrotoPrize for Innovative Use of Technology in Science Learning. The prize is awarded annually to students aged 11-18, from any school in the world, for the best video about any Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics subject matter. We hope you enjoy it!
