Pastoral care and the House system

“As a School promoting a caring, Christian ethos, St Albans High School places much importance on the girls’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, and is highly successful in achieving this aim. This is an outstanding feature of the school.”

ISI Inspection Report

The House system is highly valued within the school as the main framework for pastoral care. Houses compete enthusiastically with each other in inter-House events such as drama, debating and public speaking and a whole range of sporting activities. Girls are cared for within their Houses by their House tutor and House Master or Mistress, a responsibility which is shared in Years 12 and 13 with the Head of Sixth Form.

  • Julian - Named after Lady Juliana Berners, a fifteenth century prioress of Sopwell, famous for her learning
  • Mandeville - Named after Sir John Mandeville, associated with a book of travels in the fourteenth century
  • Paris - Named after Matthew Paris, a monk of St Albans Abbey in the thirteenth century and well known for his chronicle of local events
  • Verulam - Named after Francis Bacon, first Earl of Verulam, philosopher and writer

In many cases there is a family tradition of belonging to a particular House, which we will always seek to honour.

Girls meet with their Form teacher/House tutors twice daily for registration and at least once a week for a pastoral assembly or extended tutor period. They can arrange to see their House Master or Mistress, or indeed any member of staff at any time.

Girls in Year 7 have a lunch-time club led by specially trained sixth formers who are there to offer friendship and advice.

The school Chaplain is on hand to offer counsel and support and if the girls are feeling unwell we have a school doctor and school nurse available here for them.
