Inspection

Summary of main findings

St Albans High School for Girls' position at the top of the league tables of schools in Hertfordshire has been underlined by a glowing report from the Independent Schools Inspectorate. A team of specialists spent four days at the Senior School in Townsend Avenue, as well as at the Junior School in Wheathampstead, in October 2006 and came away with the view that it is a "highly successful" school with "many outstanding features".

They went on to say that the pupils were "enthusiastic, keen and able learners" who "achieve outstanding results in national tests and examinations, as well as in a range of other activities". They found that pupils of all ages "are articulate, listen effectively, read intelligently and write fluently". The teachers were described as well qualified, hard working and enthusiastic. They know their pupils well, understand their needs and are very well supported by a range of high quality resources. Pupil-to-teacher and pupil-to-pupil relationships are considered to be excellent and based on mutual respect. They concluded that "the young women who are educated here are well prepared for the next stage in their lives, which they enter with confidence and abiding values."

The Headmistress was delighted with the report, which she described as "a fitting tribute to the exceptionally high quality of teaching and learning which takes place in this school."

During the inspection, the inspectors examined samples of pupils' work, observed lessons and conducted formal interviews with pupils. They held discussions with teaching and non-teaching staff and with governors, observed a sample of the extra-curricular activities that occurred during the inspection period, and attended registration sessions and assemblies. The responses of parents and pupils to pre-inspection questionnaires were analysed, and the inspectors examined a range of documentation made available by the school.

The Independent Schools Inspectorate carries out inspections according to a standard framework agreed with the Department for Education and OFSTED.
