Science

The department is well established, with excellent results at IGCSE and A level. A high percentage of our Sixth Form students go on to study science related subjects at University. Throughout the school the approach to the teaching of Science is practically based with an emphasis on applications in industry and everyday life. Above all the pupils are encouraged to enjoy the lessons. Biology, Chemistry and Physics are taught by a team of dedicated specialist teachers. The department is well resourced and students are encouraged to take full advantage of the facilities, including the mobile bank of portable laptops, to gather data and present results and information in a professional way.

The amount of Science studied gradually increases as girls progress through the School. In Year 7, Science is integrated and topic-based and in Years 8 and 9 the Sciences are taught separately in Chemistry, Biology and Physics disciplines. The IGCSE courses are taught in small groups and the department offers a double science option as well as the three separate sciences which is a popular choice for the more able scientists.

The department runs a Science Club and Biology Society held during school hours and both are well attended by students. In addition, students are encouraged to explore different avenues in Science such as residential courses in Chemistry and Engineering in order to develop their interests in the subject. A variety of field trips take place including Biology field studies and a Physics CERN visit. Careers advice is important and speakers from many areas of industry are invited into school to speak to the girls about their career paths and to offer advice. Teaching staff offer help with UCAS applications and practice interviews for university entrance.
