Introduction
Music is an integral part and particular strength of daily life at St Albans High School for Girls. There is a wealth of opportunity for girls who are interested in music and for those who are musically talented.
Delivered by specialist staff, curricular music ensures that girls are encouraged to develop their musical skills and understanding with an emphasis on composition.
Individual music lessons, delivered by a team of 26 visiting teachers, are provided in all orchestral instruments as well as guitar, piano and singing. Many girls play more than one instrument and to a very high standard.
Girls can join one of the many wind bands and orchestras which are tiered according to ability, as well as a wide variety of smaller groups. There are opportunities to perform not only in one of our many School concerts held throughout the year, but also in the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban and further afield in prestigious venues such as St John's, Smith Square, the Royal Festival Hall and the Barbican.
Choral music is also strong at the School with many girls taking part in a large variety of choirs, including the very popular Gospel Choirs.
Music benefits from excellent facilities in a dedicated building, which is soon to be extended as part of a new Performing Arts building programme.
