Maths

Pupils are taught in an environment which strives to develop each girl's ability to its maximum. Lessons are challenging and are aimed to inspire girls with enthusiasm for the subject. We continually try to build on the girls' self-confidence in Mathematics so that they can recognise and celebrate their own successes.
Maths Extension Club offers girls the chance to explore ideas both within and beyond the curriculum but to a greater depth and understanding. There is also a weekly 'drop in' maths support clinic, run by members of the department and Sixth Form. The Junior (Years 8 and 9) and Senior (Years 11, 12 and 13) Team Challenges give girls the chance to compete against other schools. This competition tests mathematical, communication and teamwork skills and is thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Annual trips include a visit to Bletchley Park (Year 9) to learn about codes and ciphers and a visit to the Institute of Education (Year 12), which gives girls the opportunity to learn about aspects of Mathematics which can be applied to related subjects.
Recent examination successes include 90% A/A* at IGCSE and 85% A/B grades at A level. Girls are entered for the UKMT Mathematics Challenges in all year groups. Last year we achieved 46 Gold, 65 Silver and 96 Bronze certificates, which is excellent. Verulam and Julian are the current holders of the Junior and Senior Inter-House trophies.
