Think Lovely Thoughts - Mother Clark's update on Mtwara

Since 2004, when the relationship began between our two schools, one of our major and on-going efforts to turn lovely thoughts and impossible dreams into reality is finally becoming a reality. We continue to build upon the relationship we have forged with our sister community at Mtwara Girls' Secondary School in Southern Tanzania.

The 550 girls and 50 staff members at Mtwara, most of whom are boarders, have not had access to a regular, hygienic, and convenient water supply for many years. Instead, they have had to depend upon one hand pump located at considerable distance from the main classroom buildings and dormitories. This has made proper sanitation, washing, showers, and toilet facilities impossible. Slowly but surely, over the last four years, the wider family here at the High School have been striving to make a reliable, high quality water pumping and plumbing network a reality for our friends at Mtwara.

As of 2008, the pumping network has been commissioned and we are thrilled to confirm that clean and safe water is now provided to the school - this is a direct result of the hard work and determination of two schools, thousands of miles apart and is a real achievement. The School Chaplain returned to Mtwara for six days over the summer and saw some amazing achievements. The four shower rooms and toilet blocks have been re-equipped and now have flushing toilets and running water. Running water is now also in the Science room for the first time in 15 years and work is being done to provide running water to teachers' accommodation and to the neighbours of Mtwara Girls' School.

You can read more about the project in the Mtwara newsletter available from the Download Centre.
